Grant reporting, donor follow-up, board prep: the mission work gets the spotlight, but the admin work keeps the lights on.
Nonprofits are judged on impact, so that's where leadership attention goes. But every program we've supported has an invisible layer underneath it: compliance paperwork, donor stewardship, volunteer logistics, board documentation, work that doesn't show up in the annual report but absolutely determines whether there's a next one.
Underinvesting here doesn't save money. It just moves the cost downstream, into missed grant deadlines, lapsed donor relationships, and burned-out staff who were never supposed to be doing this work alone.
